Students at the Petty Debt Court

A morning activity

A small, select group of our students where admitted in the public gallery of the Petty Debt Court this morning to get a better idea of how civil claims are dealt with in Jersey.

The Petty Debt Court deals with a wide range of cases such as:

  • debt recovery (up to £10 000, but this will soon increase to £30 000);
  • late payment of alimony;
  • Rent arrears and evictions;
  • States of Jersey treasuries issues such as taxes arrears or social services over payments that needs to be recovered

All in all a pretty varied court list this morning.

Diane’s view on this morning:

“I had a great moment at the Petty Debt Court this morning, it was very  animated and interesting. We even had an opportunity to have a constructive exchange with the greffier and the judge.”
