Living in Jersey


If you are coming to study in Jersey, you need to know that accommodation is at a premium and follow certain rules. There are 2 types of accommodation:

  • Registered (for people who have lived in Jersey less than 5 years)
  • Entitled (for people who have been in Jersey more than 5 years)

As a newcomer you will be ‘registered’ and need to look for this type of accommodation. The Institute has negotiated prices for student accommodation with the following places:

If you fancy sharing but don’t know anyone on the course yet, we have created a private Facebook group. Only our students or potential students have access to this group. Some of the providers offer better rates to students willing to share so feel free to use this group to pair up.

St Brelade's College: Priority to First Year Students

St Brelade’s College offers accommodation for our out-of-Island students. You will need to book your accommodation directly with the college, who can be contacted by telephone: +44(0)1534 741 305 or via email at

Visit the Accommodation website which offers Fairholme guest house, situated in St Helier, about 20 minutes away from the Institute. The new 2021/22 room rates are:

  • Superior: £170
  • Standard: £145
  • Shared: £120

Both residences give priority to first year students, second year students will only be able to book a room if places are still available at the end of September. 

Field House: Shared Accommodation for First and Second Year Students

A spacious shared house located in the South west of the island, consisting of 5 bedrooms all with private bathrooms, shared kitchen, separate breakfast room/student lounge. Field House is ideal if you need a quiet place to study, which also benefits from an excellent bus link into town and being close to local amenities such as shops, sports centre, pubs and some of Jerseys prettiest beaches. Merton Hotel Self-Catering Suites

The Merton Suites are attached to the Merton hotel. The Merton will offer discounted prices for long-term bookings. Rates will be related to the amount of time spent in the suite. For more information or to make a booking, please email:

It is worth noting that the Dodo suites have twin beds and can be shared, whilst the Durrell suites contain a double bed.

  • Students of Institute of Law are entitled to the corporate rates as long as they include (cc) in their email enquiry one of the Institute’s employees email address as the reference.

  • The corporate rates are valid from 12th September 2021 and are available on request.

  • For stays up to 28 nights a deposit equivalent of the first night of stay is required. This deposit is non refundable. The remaining balance has to be settled on arrival.

  • For stays more than 29 nights a deposit of £1000 is required. This deposit is refundable on departure if there are no damages to the suite occupied. The remaining balance for the first 28 nights of your stay has to be paid on arrival. Instalments equal to 28 nights must be paid in advance every four weeks.

  • If you shorten your confirmed booking or cancel your reservation, your deposit and any instalment will be forfeited.

Sarum Hotel Studios

The Sarum Hotel in Jersey also offers self-catering accommodation from September to April. This includes all bills, free WiFi, daily cleaning, a games area, and other amenities. The building offers:

The prices for the single s/c studios or small double from October till end March for IoL students will be £40.00 per night, for a twin s/c bedroom £50.00 per night (£25.00 per person) and for a triple (two bedrooms three beds) £63.0 per night (£21.00 per person).

The apartment for 5/6 pax is already booked until the end of March 2022.

In order to guarantee the booking a deposit of 30% of the total booked is needed, as well as an advance payment on a weekly or monthly basis.

Balmoral Executive Suites have not only broken the mould when it comes to providing elegant, sumptuous and spacious living quarters, it also introduce a new concept in urban living into the non qualified market place.

Liberty Wharf is a property of 63 air-conditioned serviced apartments comprising of studio, 1-bedroom & 2-bedroom layouts stylishly decorated with contemporary furnishings. 

The apartments are equipped with a fully fitted kitchen featuring halogen hob and oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washer/dryer as well as standard kitchen utensils, cookware and appliances like a kettle, toaster and microwave. Cutlery, crockery and glassware are provided. The lounge has a comfortable seating area with sofa, TV with DVD/CD player and a dining area.

The bedrooms come standard with a Queen-size double bed, ample storage space and boast amenities like a laptop-size safe, hairdryer and iron & board. All bathrooms have a shower, most over a bath, and are equipped with a heated demister main mirror and make up/shaving mirror.

Flexible Long Stays.

Les Ormes Jersey offer long-term accommodation varying from 1 to 5 bedrooms from October until the end of May. Search availability and book your stay online with a deposit only, the longer you stay the cheaper your rate will be. Pay your monthly rent and manage your booking easily online. All bills are included except metered electricity.


Jersey has a Health reciprocal agreement with France and upon arrival, you will be asked to register at the Social Security department. For this you will need a letter from the Institute of Law showing your Jersey address as well as your residential address in France.

If you are over 18 you will need to pay circa £80 for your registration. Please note that registration is compulsory.

Once registered, you will be given a population card that you will need to present if you need to visit the doctor. Please be aware that unlike France, this card only covers part of the doctor’s fee, you will still be expected to pay circa £40 for a visit. If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident and need to visit the Accident and Emergency department, this will be free of charge, except X-Rays which may incur a small charge. Dental care or eye care is not covered by the social security department.
