Conferences
A conference entitled “Contract law of the Channel Islands at the Crossroads” is taking place in Jersey under the aegis of the Institute of Law on Friday 15th October 2010. Lawyers in the Islands have long known that this important area of the law has suffered serious tensions; torn between its civilian roots and a drift towards Anglicisation. The result has often been uncertainty as what the law is in certain respects and, more importantly, how the courts might resolve such uncertainties. With the support of the Jersey Law Commission, the conference will examine the problems and the possible solutions.
Speakers from outside the Islands include
• Professor Christian von Bar, who has been a member of the Commission on European Contract Law since 1992, chairman of the Study Group on a European Civil Code since 1999, and a member of the UNIDROIT working group on international commercial contracts since 2005.
• Rt Hon Lord Hope of Craighead, Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court.
• Professor François Terré, emeritus professor at l’Université de droit Paris II Panthéon-Assas and is a member of the Institut de France. During his distinguished academic career he has held posts at Strasbourg, Lille and Nanterre.
If a Channel Islands Contract Code, enacted in both Jersey and Guernsey, were to emerge from the work of this conference, it would be a glittering prize.

Conveyancers qualification
Under the auspices of the Institute of Law, a working group has been considering what educational provision could usefully be offered to complement the in-house practical training of conveyancers. A consultation paper was issued and the Institute of Law, the Law Society of Jersey and the Jersey Association of Property Conveyancers are grateful to those who responded. A report on the responses and the way forward is available here.
